Turpin Sampler, 1821

Turpin Sampler, 1821
This sampler was originally stitched by 11 year old Caroline Matilda Rozenia Turpin in 1821. Caroline and her family lived in Anderson Township, near Newtown, Ohio. Unfortunately, Caroline overturned with several others in a skiff crossing the Little Miami River at Round Bottom ford in Ohio on July 3, 1822, and drowned. She was just 12 years old. The Turpin sampler, when acquired by the Museum, was nailed to a piece of wood, causing holes and discoloration of the linen. The original sampler (185 years old) was on display at Promont House Museum in Milford, Ohio, but has been retired and a reproduction stitched by members of the Queen City Sampler Guild is now displayed. The reproduction pattern, including a brief history of the family of the stitcher, is for sale in the Promont House Museum Gift Shop.
